Why can't I lose myself in a game like I did as a kid?
There's a complaint every adult gamer recognizes: "I don't get into it like I used to." The game is good, the graphics are better than anything from your childhood, and yet something is missing, the total surrender, the forgetting of the world, those afternoons when you became the character and the hours simply evaporated. A lot of people assume the game got worse, or "lost its charm." It almost never is that. It's that your mind has changed its settings. (And, importantly: this is different from the plain longing for old games, here the subject is the capacity to immerse, not nostalgia.)
The child plays with their whole mind
What made that childhood immersion so deep wasn't the game, it was your mental state. A child plays with undivided attention: there are no bills to pay, no deadline tomorrow, no work problem humming in the back of the head. Their mind is entirely there. That's the soil immersion grows in: when nothing competes for your attention, you can dissolve into the experience. Psychologists call this state flow, total absorption in an activity. And flow is fragile: it only takes one thread of worry tugging at your sleeve for it not to happen.
The adult plays with a divided mind
Now think about your head while you play today. One part is in the game; another is watching the clock, remembering to text someone back, calculating tomorrow's tiredness, sometimes just buzzing with a diffuse anxiety. That background vigilance, necessary for handling adult life, is precisely what blocks total surrender. You can't lose yourself in the game because a part of you can never afford to disappear. Immersion didn't die; it's being fought over by a mind that learned never to switch off completely.
Winnicott: to play, you have to feel safe
Winnicott observed something that explains this with precision: real playing only happens in a state of confident relaxation, when the person feels safe enough to lower their guard. The child, held and supported, has that safety to spare. The adult, crossed by responsibilities and worries, often doesn't, and without lowering the guard, there's no surrender. It's not that the adult "no longer knows how to play"; it's that they rarely allow themselves the mental state in which playing flourishes. Immersion asks for a kind of surrender that adult life teaches us to fear.
How to win back (a little of) the surrender
The good news is that the capacity to immerse doesn't vanish, it needs conditions. Reducing the divided mind helps more than any graphics: playing without the phone nearby, at an hour when you're not watching the clock, with the feeling that this time is yours and nothing will collapse if you disappear for an hour. It's deliberately creating the safety that childhood handed over for free. Many people rediscover immersion not by switching games, but by switching the state they arrive in.
It's not the game, it's the world you carry
So if you've been hit by that feeling that "it's not like it used to be," maybe this is the consolation: you didn't lose the gamer you were. You're just trying to play with a mind that now carries the whole world on its back. Recognizing that changes the question, from "why did games get worse?" to "how do I feel safe enough to surrender again?" And that, deep down, is a question that matters for far more than video games.
